The church of St Mary the Virgin was consecrated in June 1845 when the ecclesiastical parish of South Darley was formed. Burials in the churchyard date from 1846.
The Burial Register from January 1846 to June 1959 is held in the Derbyshire Record Office and the Burial Register from 1959 onwards is held by the church.
Derbyshire Family History Society transcribed all inscriptions on gravestones and other memorials in 1993 and published this as: Transcript of the Memorial Inscriptions in the Church and Churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin in the Parish of South Darley (Darley Dale) and in the County of Derby. A copy is held by the church.
Churchyard records have been updated with burials since 1993.
Some grave inscriptions in the churchyard can be searched via FindaGrave where requests can also be made to locate a particular grave, photograph it and transcribe the epitaph.
The parish war memorial is located in the churchyard.
