The plantation at Cross Green is an area of woodland gifted to the parish many years ago which the parish council maintains for use by residents and by children at South Darley Primary School. There is an area for use as a forest school and also a picnic table and bench.
In celebration of the Queen’s platinum jubilee, the Parish Council installed a number of hand-crafted nesting boxes and bug hotels in the plantation. Brian Else from Chesterfield kindly made the boxes for us in exchange for a donation to Ashgate Hospice.
There are considerable costs associated with maintaining the plantation as a healthy and safe environment, not least hedge cutting, maintenance, a programme of necessary tree felling associated with ash die-back and tree planting.
