Flood Information

For information about flooding from the Environment Agency, please view the downloadable PDF file at the bottom of this page.

Here’s some advice on how to prepare for flooding.

To check for the current and projected levels on the River Derwent and for any flood alerts or warnings, see the website: River Derwent level at Matlock.

If your property may be affected by rising river levels, you may sign up for flood alerts.

In the event of a flood warning, sandbags will be provided by Derbyshire Dales District Council for residents whose properties may be at risk. For further details, see: www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/flooding where you can also find information on how to protect your home from flooding, together with an emergency Floodline number (only to be used if your property is in immediate danger of flooding).

WhatsApp ‘Darley Bridge Flood Response’ group

Colin Swindell, District Councillor for Winster and South Darley Ward, Derbyshire Dales District Council has set up a WhatsApp group to keep residents in the immediate Darley Bridge and Wenslees area informed, called ‘Darley Bridge Flood Response’.

Through this messaging group, he will provide immediate information on what he is doing and action being taken by the District Council. It will also allow residents to feedback their needs and give an on-the-ground picture of what is happening.

If you wish to be added to this group, please send your name and the words ‘Darley Bridge Flood Response’ to 07816 986 956 on WhatsApp.

This group will only be used during times when flood alerts are issued and is not to be used for any other use. It will only become active when there is a serious risk of flooding. At other times, only the email list will be used.

He asks that if you join this group, you keep ‘chat’ to an absolute minimum and only post messages during critical flood-related periods and then only when absolutely necessary. This is to keep matters focused and to prevent mobile phones repeatedly ‘going off’.

Please note that if you do not join this group, Cllr Swindell will continue to feed details through email to those signed up to his email list (please contact:  colin.swindell@derbyshiredales.gov.uk to join), but the WhatsApp group will provide real time information.

Volunteer as a Flood Warden

South Darley Parish Council wants to develop an active network of volunteers to help cover Darley Bridge in the event of a potential flooding situation. It doesn’t necessarily matter if you do not live near the river. You can still help us to communicate about flood resilience and help people in our area to understand how to be better prepared and who to contact if a flood occurs.

Would you like to play a key role in helping our community prepare for, respond to and recover from flooding?

As a flood warden volunteer you will be a vital link between our neighbourhood and those responsible for responding to flood events.

Volunteering as a flood warden can be great way to get to know people in our local area.

  • Spend more time in nature and help us to monitor local watercourses
  • Get to know our community and communicate about flooding in person and online
  • Warn about flooding encourage residents to be prepared and sign up for flood alerts
  • Help identify vulnerable residents who may require additional support during a flood
  • Be a vital neighbourhood link between residents, the Council and emergency services
  • Report and record flooding share your local knowledge and signpost to relevant agencies
  • Help with recovery after flooding and share information about available support

Full training will be given. For further details, please contact the Parish Clerk.
